Jethro Tull Review

Jethro Tull, Kansas @ Red Rocks Amphitheatre - June 8, 2011 - Morrison, CO

Live Music Review by Jennifer Knight

158 miles on a round-trip ticket to the early 70’s offered a stern education in the existence of prog rock as a fond memory thanks to the evening’s headliners, Jethro Tull.

The fifteenth row was clouded by a haze so thick after Kansas, I watched a four-year-old version of myself walk by. They graced the stage during daylight hours and welcomed us into a fairly peaceful, breezy evening with Jethro Tull.

The flute solo during ‘My God’ brought us to an alternate reality where it seemed we were watching a dramatic stage play rather than a rock concert. As I looked out over the seemingly calm crowd I found it difficult to imagine the scene of the original Aqualung tour in 1971 as it had been described with police helicopters, medics and tear gas.

Tull’s performance spoke to the abundant mix of poets and painters & doers and thinkers with the help of Martin Barre on guitar, David Goodier on bass, Doane Perry on drums and the elusive John O’Hara on keyboards.

Event Staff rattled the 8,000 number off after a casual attendance inquiry. Further probing led to an explanation that approximately 7,500 of those time traveling souls paid entry at prices ranging from $49.50 to $97.50 per ticket.

What was on the menu at that price?

Thick As A Brick
Songs From The Wood
Farm On The Freeway
Bouree
Aqualung
Cross Eyed Mary
Cheap Day Return
Mother Goose
Wondering Aloud
Up To Me
My God
Jesus Saves
Slipstream
Wind Up
Locomotive Breath

Because the crowd was only on their feet during the first two songs, once again around ‘Aqualung’ and just one more time for ‘Locomotive Breath’, they still had plenty of energy when Tull left the stage without an encore. What ensued was not the riotous behavior of 40 years ago, but mere grumblings as the audience ushered to the parking lot wondering aloud if they had enjoyed themselves.

For a band that played an entire set and full encore amid tear gas to keep us happy 40 years ago, I expected a bit more on our anniversary.
